چکیده
“Pretouch” refers to sensing modalities that are intermediate in range between touch and vision. This paper describes two pretouch senses we have created (electric field and seashell effect), and discusses the use of pretouch in manipulation.

“Seashell Effect” Pretouch for Robot Grasping
The term “Pretouch” refers to sensing modalities that are shorter range than vision but longer range than tactile sensing. The hypothesis that pretouch sensing can be useful for manipulation is being explored actively [1][2][3][4][5]. It is viewed as potentially beneficial for manipulation because it provides reliable geometric information in the last centimeter before contact. The disadvantage...
متن کاملElectric Field Pretouch: Towards Mobile Manipulation
Pretouch sensing is longer range than contact, but shorter range than vision. Our hypothesis is that closed loop feedback based on short range but non-contact measurements can improve the reliability of manipulation. Such feedback may be particularly useful in mobile manipulation and personal robotics: mobility increases the robot’s position uncertainty, which the additional feedback can overco...
متن کاملTapered Optical Fiber Coated with ZnO Nanorods for Detection of Ethanol Concentration in Water
This work presents ZnO nanorods coated multimode optical fiber sensing behavior in response to ethanol solution. The sensor operates based on modulation of light intensity which arises from manipulation of light interaction with the ambient environment in sensing region. For this purpose, two steps are experimentally applied here; etching and then coating fiber with ZnO nanorods to provide stro...
متن کاملTactile sensing and control of robotic manipulation
This paper reviews the current state of the art and outlook in robotic tactile sensing for real-time control of dextrous manipulation. We begin with an overview of human touch sensing capabilities and draw lessons for robotic manipulation. Next, tactile sensor devices are described, including tactile array sensors, force-torque sensors, and dynamic tactile sensors. The information provided by t...
متن کاملAugmenting the Acoustic Piano with Electromagnetic String Actuation and Continuous Key Position Sensing
This paper presents the magnetic resonator piano, an augmented instrument enhancing the capabilities of the acoustic grand piano. Electromagnetic actuators induce the strings to vibration, allowing each note to be continuously controlled in amplitude, frequency, and timbre without external loudspeakers. Feedback from a single pickup on the piano soundboard allows the actuator waveforms to remai...
